The CD opens with a haunting flute line that introduces the song I Don't Need the Blues, which was written by Sue Kent. It is a torch song about love gone wrong, highlighted by poignant vocals, soulful piano playing by Mark Broder, and an impeccable trumper solo by John Levno. Next, is Paradise by Sade. It is an uptempo song with a lively groove. Sue Kent's singing lifts this song to a new level. On Peel Me A Grape, made famous by Diana Krall, Sue shows her strength as a singer of standards. The back and forth interplay between Sue and Levno's trumpet enhance the humor of Dave Frishberg's lyrics. When Sue Kent first heard the song Dindi by Carlos Jobim, she immediately knew she had to record it. The final result shows why. Jobim's beautiful melody is a perfect match for Sue's lilting voice as she carries us off to 'far away clouds'. Next, Basia's Cruising For Bruising livens up the set. This energetic number features some outstanding harmonies. So What by Miles Davis is an instrumental that gives Sue Kent's band, Jazz It Up, a chance to shine. Skinny Bishop starts things off with the famous bass line, while Levno (trumpet), Jeff Schwartz (drums) and Sue Kent (piano) answer back.The playing and the solos are superb and one wishes this track was longer than 2:58. Baby You're Mine, another Basia song is next. It features a complex arrangement, strong vocals from Sue and some wonderfully stacked harmonies. Engineer DC Seville really outdoes himself on this one. Finally, What's Going On by Marvin Gaye is given a jazzier treatment than normal, which gives the listener a brand new way to appreciate this R&B classic. Jazz It Up excels once again on this track. So, there it is, Changing Direction by Sue Kent; a marvelous CD that is constantly changing direction but never veers off course.
