I have been teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses on the history of the English language as well as English-as-an-International-Language for several years. I have been searching for some time for a textbook that could possibly include both topics and which would: (a) take a critical look at English; (b) do justice to both areas and, at the same time, (c) be consistent, theoretically, regarding the matter of language change. This book by Graddol et al is just that book. Each chapter, written by one of the editors, is logically developed and greatly informative. Additional end-of-chapter readings give depth to one or more of the particular issues discussed within the chapter. All chapters work together seamlessly. For graduate students, additional readings are necessary--but "Changing English" gives them foundational information and a theoretical background about language change that lead easily into more specialized texts. The inclusion of color photos, maps, and other charts make the book attractive. Kudos to Graddol et al!
